1. Classification and Selection of International Students

1) Japanese Government Scholarship Students
 

【Nomination by the Japanese embassy in your home country】

The Japanese Embassy in your country provides application forms and also selects successful candidates from the applications received. Please contact the nearest Japanese Embassy in your country for more information.

Research Student (Graduate Student)

Applicants must be under 35 years old and must have a bachelor's degree. The Embassy of Japan will screen the applicants based on their transcript, research plan and language proficiency and the Japanese government will have a final selection.  

Teacher Training Students

Applicants must be under 35 years old, have a bachelor's degree, and have worked as teachers in their home countries. After undertaking six-month Japanese language training at the university designated by the Japanese Government, they are admitted as non-degree research students.
Undergraduate Students Applicants who have graduated from high school take an examination at the Japanese diplomatic mission in their home country. After taking one year of Japanese education, successful applicants take an entrance examination for the university designated by the Japanese Government.
Japanese Studies Students

 

Applicants must be enrolled in undergraduate university courses in their home country and be aged from 18 to 30. Successful applicants will be enrolled as part-time students for one year.

<Course detail>
 A: A course conducted mainly to improve students’ Japanese language proficiency with supplementary study about Japan and Japanese culture.
 B: A course conducted mainly about Japan and Japanese culture with supplementary study to improve Japanese language proficiency.

【Nomination by Shimane University】

Shimane University selects candidates and recommends them to the Japanese Government. If you are nominated and accepted by the government, you can study at Shimane University as a Japanese government scholarship student. If you have any questions about the application, please contact the International Student Section.

Research Students (Graduate Students)

Applicants must be under 35 years old and must have a bachelor's degree. The Embassy of Japan will screen the applicants based on their transcript, research plan and language proficiency and the Japanese government will have a final selection.  

Japanese Studies Students This program is for international students who belong to universities that have student exchange agreements with Shimane University. Successful applicants are enrolled as part-time students for one year.

 

2) Privately-financed International Students

International students in this category can enroll in Shimane University by either "Regular Selection" or "Privately-financed International Student Special Selection." Please contact our Admission Office for more information.

Undergraduate courses ・Privately-financed International Student Special Selection
Shimane University selects successful applicants based on their EJU (https://www.jasso.go.jp/en/eju/index.html) scores. EJU examination sites are located in foreign countries as well as in Japan. Foreign residents who pass the examination can thus be accepted without having to travel to Japan. This special selection is available for the Faculty of Law and Literature, the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering, and the Faculty of Life and Environmental Science.

In this program, all lectures and seminars are given in English. Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree.

3) Foreign Government Scholarship Students

Shimane University accepts foreign government scholarship students. For more information, please contact the appropriate government agency in your country.

4) Exchange Students

Students from foreign universities that have exchange agreements with Shimane University can study here as exchange students for one or two semesters. They are enrolled as non-degree part-time students (Special Auditing Students) in either undergraduate or graduate courses. Such students must return to their home university to complete their degree courses. Please contact the International Office in your home university for more information. Based on the student exchange agreement, students are admitted to particular undergraduate classes. They receive credits after passing final examinations. Shimane University also issues a certificate of earned credits.

Graduate School
Special Auditing Student

Based on the student exchange agreement, students are admitted to particular graduate school classes. They receive credits after passing final examinations. Shimane University also issues the certificate of earned credits.

Special Research Student  Based on the student exchange agreement, students are admitted to conduct particular research projects under a research advisor.

2. Procedure for Entry to Japan

1) Complete admission procedures for Shimane University

Once you complete the admission procedures for Shimane University, a Letter of Acceptance will be issued.

2) Apply for Certificate of Eligibility

The applicant or their proxy (university officials, family or sibling of an applicant residing in Japan, or financial supporter) may file an application for Certificate of Eligibility at an immigration office in Japan. After receiving the certificate of eligibility, the proxy sends it to the applicant in their country of residence.

Documents required:
  • Application for Certificate of Eligibility
  • A copy of either Letter of Acceptance or Notification of Passing Entrance Examination
  • Two passport-style photos (H4cm X W3cm) taken within the last 6 months
  • Letter of Financial Support
  • Certification of Japanese Language Proficiency Test
  • Others (A document certifying your research project may be required)
Note:
Japanese Government Scholarship Students recommended by Shimane University or the Japanese Embassy in your home country do not have to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility. Please follow the instructions of the University or the Embassy and apply for a "College Student" Visa. Exchange Students are also required to follow the instructions given by the University.

3) Apply for a "College Student" Visa at the nearest Japan Embassy or Consulate in your home country

Documents required:
Certificate of Eligibility, your passport, and two passport-style photos

4) Entry to Japan

Note:
Depending on your country, it may take a long time for the Certificate of Eligibility and Visa to be granted. You are strongly advised to begin the application procedure well before you plan to start your studies. Please follow the advice of Shimane University and the appropriate diplomatic mission concerning this matter.

4. Housing

1) Student Dormitory
The student dormitory is located a 10-minute walk away from Matsue Campus. There are three buildings, A, B and C on the same premises.
Admission to the student dormitory is in April and October. Call for application will be usually posted on the General Information of the Shimane University International Center website around February and August of each year. International students who wish to move into the student dormitory must submit an application form by the deadline. Please note that if there are no vacancies in the dormitory, we do not call for application. If there are larger number of applicants, the selection will be done based on the selection criteria. Therefore, you may not be guaranteed a room even if you wish to move into.
