1. Classification and Selection of International Students
1) Japanese Government Scholarship Students
【Nomination by the Japanese embassy in your home country】 The Japanese Embassy in your country provides application forms, and also selects successful candidates from the applications received. Please contact the nearest Japanese Embassy in your country for more information. |
Research Student (Graduate Student) |
Applicants must be under 35 years old and must have a bachelor's degree. The Embassy of Japan will screen the applicants based on their transcript, research plan and language proficiency and the Japanese government will have a final selection. |
Teacher Training Students | Applicants must be under 35 years old, have a bachelor's degree, and have worked as teachers in their home countries. After undertaking six months Japanese language training at the university designated by the Japanese Government, they are admitted as non-degree research students. | |
Undergraduate Students | Applicants who have graduated from high school take an examination at the Japanese diplomatic mission in their home country. After taking one year of Japanese education, successful applicants take an entrance examination for the university designated by the Japanese Government. | |
Japanese Studies Students |
Applicants must be enrolled in undergraduate university courses in their home country and be aged from 18 to 30. Successful applicants will be enrolled as part-time students for one year. <Course detail> |

Research Students (Graduate Students) |

2) Privately-financed International Students
Official admission information can be found on Shimane University official website. |
Undergraduate courses | ・Privately-financed International Student Special Selection Shimane University selects successful applicants based on their EJU (https://www.jasso.go.jp/en/eju/index.html) scores. EJU examination sites are located in foreign countries as well as in Japan. Foreign residents who pass the examination can thus be accepted without having to travel to Japan. 3) Foreign Government Scholarship Students
Shimane University accepts foreign government scholarship students, such as those from Malaysia. For more information, please contact the appropriate government agency in your country.
4) Exchange Students
Students from foreign universities that have exchange agreements with Shimane University can study here as exchange students for one or two semesters. They are enrolled as non-degree part-time students (Special Auditing Students) in either undergraduate or graduate courses. Such students must return to their home university to complete their degree courses. Please contact the International Office in your home university for more information. Undergraduate Special Auditing Student |
Based on student exchange agreement, students are admitted to particular undergraduate classes. They receive credits after passing final examinations. Shimane University also issues the certificate of earned credits. |
Graduate School Special Auditing Student |
Based on student exchange agreement, students are admitted to particular graduate school classes. They receive credits after passing final examinations. Shimane University also issues the certificate of earned credits. |

Special Research Student | Based on student exchange agreement, students are admitted to conduct particular research projects under a research advisor. |
2. Procedure for Entry to Japan
1) Complete admission procedures for Shimane University
Once you complete the admission procedure of Shimane University, the Letter of Acceptance will be issued.
2) Apply for Certificate of Eligibility
The applicant or their proxy (University officials, family or a sibling of an applicant residing in Japan, or financial supporter) may file an application for Certificate of Eligibility at an Immigration Office in Japan. After receiving the certificate of eligibility, the proxy sends it to the applicant in their country of residence.

- A copy of either Letter of Acceptance or Notification of Passing Entrance Examination
- Tow pieces of passport-style photos (H4cm X W3cm) taken within the last 6 months
- Letter of Financial Support
- Certification of Japanese Language Proficiency Test
- Others (A document certifying your research project may be required)
- Note:
- Japanese Government Scholarship Students recommended by Shimane University or the Japanese Embassy in your home country do not have to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility. Please follow the instructions of the University or the Embassy and apply for a "College Student" Visa. Exchange Students are also required to follow the instructions given by the University.
3) Apply for a "College Student" Visa at the nearest Japan Embassy or Consulate in your home country

4) Entry to Japan
- Note:
- It may take a long time a Certificate of Eligibility and Visa to be granted, depending on your country. You are strongly advised to begin the application procedure well before you plan to start your studies. Please follow the advice of Shimane University and the appropriate diplomatic mission in this matter.
3. School Fees
Japanese Government Scholarship Students, Foreign Government Scholarship Students, and Exchange Students do not need to pay tuition and certain other fees.

4. Housing
1) Student Dormitory
Student dormitory is located 10 min walk away from Matsue campus. There are three buildings, A, B and C in the same premises.
The admission to the student dormitory is usually in April and October. Please contact International Exchange Division for admission application.

"Comprehensive Renter's Insurance for International Students Studying in Japan" by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services
Comprehensive Renter's Insurance + Guarantor's Protection Fund
This policy provides you with protection against damages to your landlord's property due to fire or accident, accidental damage, damage to your personal belongings due to fire, flooding, or the like, and any losses incurred by your guarantor through the joint guarantee. You can join this insurance at the International Exchange Division.

Guarantor
In Japan, a guarantor is usually required before you can take out a contract for a private apartment. If you cannot find a guarantor, the Shimane University International Students Support Association can be your guarantor, provided that you join the above insurance scheme.
Loans for Private Apartment Rental Deposits
If necessary, Shimane University International Students Support Association can loan you the rental deposit (equivalent to monthly rent for two to three months) you must pay when you first move into a private apartment. If you wish to request a loan from this association, please contact the International Exchange Division.
5. Scholarship for Privately-financed International Students
International Students for degree courses are eligible to apply. Not all international students can receive these scholarships.
