At Shimane University, International students are defined as those whose status of residence is "Student"
Degree Courses
1) Undergraduate Students
Eligibility for Bachelor's courses
- completion of 12 years education in a foreign county.
- applicants approved by the Minister of Education (MEXT).
2) Graduate Students
Eligibility for Master's courses
- completion of 16 years education in a foreign county.
- graduates from a Japanese University.
- applicants approved by the Minister of Education (MEXT)
- people aged over 22 who do not have Bachelor's degrees, but who have equivalent ability to university graduates, judged by Shimane University to be suitable for entry.
- people who do not have Bachelor's degrees, but who have equivalent ability to university graduates, passed Shimane University examination to be suitable for entry.
Eligibility for Doctoral courses
- holders of Master's degrees
- holders of degrees equivalent of a Master's, gained in a foreign country
- applicants approved by the Minister of Education (MEXT).
- people aged over 24 who do not have Master's degrees, but who have equivalent ability to Master's graduates, and are judged by Shimane University to be suitable for entry.

- completion of 18 years education in a foreign county
- graduates from departments of medicine or dentistry in Japanese universities.

Japanese government scholarships pay a generous monthly allowance, and also cover your international round trip air-fare to and from Japan.

Teacher Training Students
Applicants must be under 35 years old and must have a bachelor's degree. After undertaking six months Japanese language training in a university designated by the Japanese government, successful applicants study education for one year as non-degree research students.
Undergraduate Students
Applicants who have graduated from high school take an examination at the Japanese diplomatic mission in their home country. After taking one year of Japanese education, successful applicants take an entrance examination for a university designated by the Japanese Government.
Japanese Studies Students
Applicants must be enrolled in undergraduate university courses in their home country and be aged from 18 to 30. Successful applicants will be enrolled as part-time students for one year.

a) Regular Selection
Under Regular Selection, candidates take an entrance examination with ordinary Japanese students. Shimane University selects successful applicants based on the results of the examination.
b) Privately-financed International Student Special Selection
Undergraduate courses
Shimane University selects successful applicants based on their EJU (http://www.jasso.go.jp/en/eju/index.html) scores. EJU examination sites are located in foreign countries as well as in Japan. Foreign residents who pass the examination can thus be accepted without having to travel to Japan. This special selection is available for the Faculty of Law and Literature, the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and the Faculty of Life and Environmental Science.

Candidates may enter graduate courses depending on the results of examinations or interviews, as determined by each individual faculty.

3) Foreign Government Scholarship Students
Foreign government scholarship programs are available in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait. Please contact the appropriate government agency in your country for more information.
4) Exchange Students
Students from foreign universities that have exchange agreements with Shimane University can study here as exchange students for one year. They are enrolled as non-degree part-time students (Special Auditing Students) in either undergraduate or graduate courses. Such students must return to their home university to complete their degree courses. Please contact the International Office in your home university for more information.
a) Short-term Student Exchange Promotion Program: JASSO Scholarship ( http://www.jasso.go.jp/en/study_j/scholarships/scholarship/short_term.html )
Exchange students applicants are eligible for a JASSO scholarship (80,000 yen per month), based on selection by Shimane University. This scholarship also covers a round trip air fare.
b) Privately-financed Exchange Student
Applicants who are approved by Shimane University on the basis of their financial situation can also come to Japan as privately-financed exchange students.

3. Procedure for Entry to Japan
1) Complete admission procedures for Shimane University
2) Apply for Certificate of Eligibility
The applicant or their proxy (University officials, family of the applicant, or a sibling residing in Japan) may make an Application for Certificate of Eligibility at an Immigration Office in Japan. After receiving the certificate of eligibility, the proxy sends it to the applicant in their country of residence.

- Government Scholarship Students recommended by Shimane University or the Japanese Embassy in your home country do not have to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility. Please follow the instructions of the University or the Embassy and apply for a "Student" Visa.
3) Apply for a "Student" Visa at the nearest Japanese diplomatic post (embassy or consulate) in your home country

- It may take a long time a Certificate of Eligibility and Visa to be granted, depending on your country. You are strongly advised to begin the application procedure well before you plan to start your studies. Guarantor
In Japan, a guarantor is usually required before you can take out a contract for a private apartment. The insurance policy described makes it easier for international students to secure a guarantor, by easing the psychological and financial burdens placed on them as your guarantor. If you cannot find a guarantor, the Shimane University International Students Support Association can be your guarantor, provided that you join the insurance scheme.
Loans for Private Apartment rental deposits
If necessary, Shimane University International Students Support Association can loan you the rental deposit (monthly rent for two months) you must pay when you first move into a private apartment. If you wish to request a loan from this association, please contact the International Student Section.
