On October 27, 2026, Shimane University held a career seminar for international students titled “Self-Assessment and Company-Analysis.” The seminar featured Tadashi Matsumoto, an Employment Support Navigator at Matsue Shinsotsu Ouen Hello Work, who shared practical advice on job hunting in Japan and the preparation required for a successful job search.
During the seminar, participants learned about Japan’s new graduate recruitment system, including the recruitment schedule and selection process commonly used by Japanese companies. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of early preparation, such as conducting self-assessments, researching industries and companies, and improving Japanese language proficiency before beginning the application process.
In the session on self-assessment, students were encouraged to identify their strengths, values, and career goals. The speaker explained that understanding oneself is essential not only for finding a suitable career path but also for effectively presenting one’s qualifications and experiences in application documents and job interviews. International students were also advised to reflect on important questions frequently raised during the job-hunting process, such as why they chose to study in Japan and why they wish to pursue a career in Japan.
The seminar also introduced effective approaches to industry and company research, including the use of corporate websites, company information sessions, and other resources. Students learned the importance of comparing multiple companies in order to develop a deeper understanding of potential employers and to articulate stronger motivations for applying.
In addition, participants were introduced to support services available to international students, including university career centers and Hello Work offices. Through a worksheet-based exercise on inductive self-assessment, students had the opportunity to reflect on their experiences and gain a better understanding of their personal strengths.
The seminar provided participants with valuable insights into the Japanese job-hunting process and offered an opportunity to think more deeply about their future career development in Japan.
