On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Mr. Girish Nair (International Director) and Mr. Jun Kim (Senior Mnager - Global Recruitment) from the Waikato Institute of Technology (WINTEC), New Zealand, visited Shimane University.

Since 2009, the Faculty of Medicine at Shimane University has been conducting short-term overseas training programs at WINTEC under the leadership of Prof. Jun Iwata (Professor of Medical English Education and Director, Center for Foreign Language Education). Through these programs, many students have broadened their international perspectives. The purpose of this visit was to explore possibilities for expanding these long-standing initiatives in the Faculty of Medicine into university-wide exchanges.

Following a courtesy visit to President Hiroki Otani, a discussion meeting was held with Vice President Yoshimi Kataoka (in charge of Globalization Promotion), Prof. Koji Sakane (Director of the International Center), Prof. Atsushi Kamei (Dean of the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering), as well as faculty members from the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Life and Environmental Science. Participants actively exchanged ideas on a variety of topics, including the potential for new cross-faculty short-term overseas training programs, the use of online exchange, and the introduction of farm training opportunities.

From the WINTEC side, it was highlighted that the institution has strengths not only in the medical field but also in business, IT, tourism, and agricultural technology, offering attractive training opportunities that draw on New Zealand’s unique history, culture, and geographical characteristics. In addition, Shimane University introduced the unique appeal of Shimane, including its rich history and natural environment. Expectations grew that combining the distinctive features of both regions could lead to the creation of new joint research initiatives and student exchange opportunities.

This visit provided a meaningful opportunity to discuss the next stage of collaboration between the two institutions.
