On Friday, May 15, 2026, a group of 21 students from Lee Woo Sing College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong visited Shimane University and participated in an exchange program with our students. Their visit was part of a week‑long study tour designed to explore the natural environment of the San’in region and learn about Japanese history and culture. This marks their second visit following last year’s program.

17 Shimane University students who had volunteered in advance warmly welcomed the delegation, and the exchange program began in a friendly atmosphere. The event opened with an English presentation introducing Shimane University by the Shimadai Ambassadors, followed by self‑introduction slides and an original quiz about the San’in region, which quickly helped everyone relax and engage.

Next, Prof. Sakane, Director of the International Center, gave an overview of the history and cultural characteristics of the San’in region, incorporating stories about tatara ironmaking and Lafcadio Hearn. Participants listened with great interest.

In the second half of the program, students were divided into groups for a campus tour. Shimane University students guided the visitors to recommended spots on campus, sharing the appeal of the university from a student’s perspective. During the reflection session after the tour, participants commented that the Co‑op bakery bread was delicious, that the specimen displays at the university museum were powerful and impressive, and that the view of the city and Lake Shinji from the top floor of the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering building was beautiful. Many guests expressed a desire to return to Shimane, while Shimane University students shared their interest in visiting Hong Kong.

Although some participants appeared nervous at first, they soon became comfortable through the exchange activities, chatting cheerfully and exchanging contact information by the end of the program.

This exchange event provided Shimane University students with a valuable opportunity to broaden their international perspectives through interaction with peers from overseas. For the students from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, it surely became a memorable part of their study tour in Japan.
