On Monday, February 9, 2026, nine faculty members and students from Naresuan University, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, and Chiang Mai University visited Shimane University through the “Sakura Science Program,” an international youth science exchange initiative implemented by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Following last year’s selection, the program proposed by Prof. Daishi Kuroiwa of the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering was again adopted, and this year Chiang Mai University joined for the first time, enabling the invitation of participants from three universities.
During the courtesy visit, President Hiroki Otani delivered a welcome address, followed by self-introductions from the invited participants. Although the group arrived in Matsue later than planned due to heavy snowfall and had to adjust their schedule, they introduced themselves with bright, unfatigued smiles, and the meeting proceeded in a warm and friendly atmosphere throughout.
During their stay, the participants will engage in joint research and discussions focusing on mathematical sciences, data science, and AI, exploring both the shared and diverse social challenges faced by Japan and Thailand. In the latter half of the program, they will also have opportunities to experience Japanese culture, including a visit to Matsue Castle and a traditional tea ceremony. For all students visiting Japan for the first time, the snowy scenery is expected to be a particularly memorable experience.
Shimane University and the three Thai universities have long maintained educational and research exchanges under university level agreements. In particular, through the Sakura Science Program led by Professor Kuroiwa, research collaboration and student exchange have steadily deepened. It is hoped that the students invited this year will go on to become the next generation of leaders who contribute to addressing social issues in both Japan and Thailand.
