On Monday, January 26, 2026, six university students majoring in IT from the state of Kerala, India, visited Shimane University. During their visit, they attended a lecture on life in Japan and interacted with Shimane University students. The group came to Japan to participate in an internship program organized by the Lake Nakaumi, Lake Shinji & Mt. Daisen Area Mayors Association. Beginning the following day, they will take part in a ten‑day internship at IT companies in Matsue and Yonago.

The visit began with a welcome address by Professor Sakane Koji, Director of the International Center, followed by self‑introductions from the Indian participants in Japanese. This was followed by a lecture from Assistant Professor Silpa Ammini Sasidharan of the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering, who is originally from Kerala. Drawing on her expertise in geoscience, she introduced the geological formation, geographical features, and uniqueness of the Izumo region. She also highlighted similarities between Matsue and Kerala—both regions rich in waterfront landscapes—and shared photos of their beautiful lakes and coastlines. In addition, she offered practical insights into Japanese food culture and dailylife, based on her own experiences.

Following the lecture, Shimane University Ambassadors and Indian exchange students introduced recommended foods and sightseeing spots, accompanied by photos. The visiting students appeared to grow even more enthusiastic about their upcoming life in Japan as they listened to presentations from peers of a similar age.

In the latter half of the visit, the Shimane University Ambassadors led a campus tour, which included a stop at the University Museum “ASHIKARU.” The visiting students listened attentively to explanations by Professor Ege Kazuhiro, the museum director, and actively asked questions in Japanese. While observing the patches of snow remaining on campus, lively conversations in both Japanese and English emerged about places they hoped to visit during their free time.

For the visiting students, the program provided a valuable opportunity to gain practical knowledge with a view toward future employment in the San’in region. For Shimane University students, it served as a meaningful chance to deepen their interest in India. We hope that the internship program beginning the next day will be a fruitful and rewarding experience for them.
