On Saturday, December 6th, we held an International Alumni Symposium as the first part of the “Shimane University International Party .”
Under the theme “Life Paths After Graduating from Shimane University,” we heard from alumni who are now employed and thriving overseas and within the prefecture. They shared their experiences during their time at our university, advice on what students should do during their studies, and insights on securing employment.
In opening remarks, Vice President Kataoka stated that hearing from alumni is an extremely valuable opportunity. She told the participating students, “I hope you will take the advice of your seniors to heart and apply it to your future student life.”
Next, the speakers introduced themselves and shared their most memorable experiences during their time at the university, along with advice for student life. They encouraged students to study diligently, but also emphasized the importance of interacting with people from diverse countries, not just Japanese students, and enjoying life in Matsue. Furthermore, they stressed that when seeking employment in Japan, it is crucial to clearly define what one wants to do and to strive to acquire Japanese language skills. They also emphasized the importance of not giving up on the desire to find employment and persevering.
In closing remarks, International Center Director Sakane expressed his desire to “give back to the university that has supported me.” He thanked the alumni who participated in the symposium, stating that it was a great honor and a joy to see them carrying such sentiments.
The International Center will continue to foster connections between current and alumni students through events like this one.
