Global Fashion Walk was held at Shimane University
Shimane University hosted the Global Fashion Walk on November 21, 2025, as part of its annual “Global Month” initiatives. The event brought together approximately 60 participants, including Japanese students, international students, faculty and staff members, and members of the general public. Models from 9 countries (Ukraine, Nepal, Colombia, France, Indonesia, Argentina, India, Bangladesh and Japan) gathered to share their cultures and strengthen international understanding through traditional attire, multilingual greetings, and interactive activities.

The event opened with a warm welcome address from Prof. Yoshimi Kataoka, Vice President for the Promotion of Globalization, who emphasized the importance of intercultural understanding and the value of international exchange within the university community. Prof. Kataoka attended the event wearing a Japanese high school uniform, an outfit strongly associated with Japanese culture and introduced it to the audience. Her light-hearted participation added a unique highlight to the opening, setting an inviting and friendly tone for the rest of the program.

Following the address, the highlight of the evening, the “red-carpet fashion walk” began. Models walked the red carpet wearing the traditional clothing of their home countries, introducing themselves by name, country, and the name of the attire they wore. They also offered a short greeting in their native languages, saying “Welcome to Shimane University.” The walkway was filled with colorful and diverse outfits, including Indian saris, Ukrainian vyshyvanka, Colombian manta, Indonesian batik and more, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.

The event also featured an online interactive game designed to engage both models and audience members. The winner was an elementary school student from the general public, who received applause and a small commemorative gift. All the models who attended the event in traditional attire were also presented with a thank-you gift in appreciation of their contributions. In addition to the red-carpet walk, cultural display booths showcased items from Korea, China, Argentina, India, and Japan. These displays allowed visitors to explore the textures, colors, and stories behind each country's cultural items, fostering deeper appreciation for global traditions.

The “Global Fashion Walk” received positive media attention, with Local Cable TV broadcasting highlights of the event and the San’in Chuo Shimpo publishing an article. The article emphasized the event’s value in deepening international understanding and facilitating cultural exchange across the campus community.
The atmosphere was warm and celebratory, with participants encouraging one another throughout the fashion walk. Many shared that they discovered new and interesting aspects of other cultures. Through traditional clothing, language sharing, displays, and interactive activities, the Global Fashion Walk became a memorable celebration of diversity and highlighted the cultural richness of Shimane University.
