On November 15, 2025, Prof. Otani Hiroki, President of Shimane University and Prof. B. S. Murty, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad(IITH) jointly inaugurated the IIT Hyderabad-Shimane University Joint Centre of Excellence(COE). The establishment of this Centre was originally agreed and signed during Prof. Murthy’s visit to Shimane University in May 2025 and the inauguration in Hyderabad marked the formal beginning of its activities.
The ceremony was graced by His Excellency Mr. Ono Keiichi, Ambassador of Japan to India and Dr. Hashimoto Kazuhito, President of JST, underscoring the national significance of this collaboration.
The Centre is expected to become an important foundation for strengthening academic exchange, conducting advanced joint research and nurturing human resources who will contribute to both countries’ scientific and technological progress.

On the following day, November 16, during the 3rd Japan Academic Day, President Otani and Director Murty held a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to establish a satellite office of the Japan-India Global Education and Research Centre (JIGER) at IITH. JIGER, established at Shimane University under the MEXT “Inter-University Exchange Project,” serves as a Japan-side hub for promoting academic collaboration and nurturing the next generation of human resources who will connect the two countries. The new joint office at IITH will act as the India-side hub, expanding opportunities for student and researcher exchange and strengthening joint research links not only with IITH but also with other leading Indian institutions.
