On Thursday, October 23, 2025, seven faculty members and students from Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), India, paid a courtesy visit to President Otani of Shimane University.

The delegation visited Japan under the Japan Science and Technology Agency’s (JST) "Sakura Science Program," part of the International Youth Science Exchange Project. Led by Assistant Professor Silpa A. Sasidharan of the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering, the group engaged in a seven-day research exchange program that includes on-campus workshops and field studies of the unique geological features of the Shimane Peninsula and surrounding geoparks.

At the beginning of the courtesy visit, President Otani expressed his hope that the interaction with Shimane University students would lead to future collaborative research opportunities. He also encouraged the visitors to enjoy their stay in Matsue, a city rich in traditional Japanese culture. Dr. Ratheesh Kumar of CUSAT shared his enthusiasm for studying the geological characteristics of the Shimane Peninsula and expressed his anticipation for experiencing Japanese culture, cuisine, and the scenic beauty of Matsue.

During the discussion, the group discovered commonalities between Matsue and Kerala, the southwestern Indian state where CUSAT is located—particularly their shared abundance of marine resources. The conversation was lively and friendly throughout.

Since signing an inter-university exchange agreement in 2016, Shimane University and CUSAT have maintained ongoing research collaboration. This visit has sparked expectations for the potential development of new degree programs between the two universities.

Divided into two groups, the participants explored various university facilities under the ambassadors’ guidance. At the university museum, they attentively examined exhibits of minerals collected from Shimane Prefecture and the broader San’in region, as well as topographic models, deepening their understanding of the area's distinctive geological features.
