On Thursday, June 19, 2025, the Shimadai Ambassadors hosted a special event: a Walking Tour with Shimadai Ambassadors, bringing together international and Japanese students to explore the neighborhood around Shimane university.

Twelve students from the University of Arkansas, currently in Japan for a summer program, joined nine Shimane University students for the two-hour tour. Divided into three groups, participants strolled through local spots, including favorite eateries and shops, introducing the sights in English.

One group visited a local supermarket that Shimane students regularly shop at. There, they highlighted the deli corner, the wide variety of bread and snacks, and uniquely Japanese products that fascinated the students. At amusement shop and a bookstore, conversations came alive around popular manga and anime character goods, offering a peek into Japanese pop culture. Along the way, students asked about the meanings of kanji characters on street signs, reflecting their growing interest in the language and culture.

For the Shimane university students, the challenge was just as meaningful: explaining everyday things in English gave new awareness to what they usually take for granted. The tour offered a special opportunity to experience the excitement and occasional challenge of cross-cultural communication, deepening bonds beyond borders.
