On May 12, 2025, at the Matsue Campus, a signing ceremony was held for an agreement between Shimane University and the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) to establish a Joint Center of Excellence.
The ceremony was attended by Prof. B.S. Murty, Director of IIT Hyderabad, Mr. Sibi George, Ambassador of India to Japan and his spouse, Mr. Chandru Appar, Consul General of India in Osaka-Kobe and his spouse, Dr. Yashawant Dev Panwar, Science and Technology Counsellor, Embassy of India.
This Joint Center aims to cultivate the next generation of human resource with an entrepreneurial mindset, strengthen the Japan-India Scientific and Technological partnership and equipping students, researchers and academics to lead industries and contribute to society in both countries. Established through the joint support of Shimane University and IIT Hyderabad, the Center will engage in student exchange programs, joint research and workshops, entrepreneurship support, and other activities. By leveraging the strengths of both nations, the center seeks to advance academic and business sectors.
Shimane University and IIT Hyderabad signed an academic exchange agreement in 2019 and have since built a strong academic collaboration, achieving significant results in education and research. This marks the first time that IIT Hyderabad, a rapidly growing institution in India's engineering and technology fields, is establishing such a center in partnership with a Japanese university.
At the signing ceremony, Shimane University President Hiroki Otani expressed his gratitude to the attendees and remarked, "The establishment of this Center will further strengthen the relationship between the two universities, accelerate academic research exchange, and contribute to the advancement of education and research in both countries."
Prof. B.S. Murty, Director of IIT Hyderabad also stated, "This MoU signifies a new chapter, as this is the first of its kind Joint Center of Excellence between IIT Hyderabad and a Japanese University, fostering deeper collaboration between the two institutions. I am confident that IIT Hyderabad will serve as a hub, expanding this partnership across India. Together, Shimane University and IIT Hyderabad will drive innovation, research, and economic growth, paving the way for a brighter future for both nations"
This Center is expected to become a symbol of Japan-India collaboration, promoting innovative research and academic exchange that will shape the future.
