Participated in the Japan-Brazil University Rectors' Summit

 On January 31, 2025, President Otani Hiroki participated in the Japan-Brazil University Rectors' Summit held at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. This summit aimed to promote research and educational exchanges between Japanese and Brazilian universities and was co-hosted by the University of São Paulo and the University of Tsukuba to commemorate the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Japan. A total of 20 university presidents from both countries attended the meeting.
 The summit focused on global issues shared by Japan and Brazil, such as climate change. President Otani served as a moderator in a group session themed "Ocean and Disaster Management," facilitating active discussions on the initiatives undertaken by each university.
 Prior to the summit, President Otani visited the Faculty of Philosophy, Literature, and Human Sciences at the University of São Paulo, a partner institution of our university. He had discussions with Prof. Adrián Pablo FANJUL, Director of the faculty, Associate Professor Oda, and Lecturer Yamamoto from the Japanese Language and Culture program. Since signing an agreement in 2020, Shimane University and the University of São Paulo have been promoting student exchanges through study abroad programs and online interactions. During the discussions, they also touched on the double degree program, which has been under consideration, reaffirming the commitment of both universities to strengthening cooperation for its realization.
 Furthermore, Prof. FANJUL mentioned that the Japanese language course at the University of São Paulo marks its 60th anniversary and emphasized the significance of the agreement with Shimane University for the continuation of the course.
 After the summit, President Otani visited the leaders of the Shimane Kenjin Kai (Shimane Prefectural Association) in Brazil. He learned about the history and current situation of the association and engaged in discussions about potential future collaborations.
 This visit to Brazil is expected to further deepen exchanges between Shimane University and Brazil, leading to continued development in the future.
