“Tell Me Your Hit Chart! event was held on November 27th, as part of the Shimadai Global Month event. In this event, the presenters freely shared the meaning of the lyrics and favorite parts of songs popular in their home countries or songs that they like in English.
Students from Benin, Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, and Bangladesh introduced nostalgic songs, songs by popular artists in their home countries, and songs that had a great influence on them, while explaining the lyrics and sharing their own memories. Although the presentation time was limited to 10 minutes per person, some students made their own slides to make their presentations easier to understand.
The messages in the songs varied from friendship, first love, hope for the future, and love for family, but this event made us realize that music, which conveys words to people through melody, is a universal way of expression, and that we can empathize with people across language barriers.
