On November 5, 2024, the International Center invited Mr. Wei-Jen Chen of Tai-Yun Sake Brewery LLC, who was born in Taiwan and studied at Shimane University, to give a lecture as a Global Month event.
Mr. Chen gave an opening speech by Ms. Kataoka, Director of the International Center, Globalization Division, and talked about his encounter with sake while studying abroad at Shimane University and his internship at a Japanese sake brewery.
He also talked extensively about how he came to start his own sake brewery. As for why he chose Shimane University as his study abroad destination, he said that he was interested in Japanese mythology and was attracted to Izumo-taisha shrine
He also said that he was able to spend a fulfilling student life at Shimane because it was located close to Taiwan, rich in nature, and conveniently located to everywhere.
He also gave a lecture on the process of making sake and mentioned that it required a lot of hard work before the sake was ready.
In response to a question from a student who attended the seminar, he shared that he majored in graphic design at a university in Taiwan and created the company logo and sake labels in collaboration with his friends.
He told us that he was able to utilize the knowledge he gained as a student in his work.
The International Center will continue to provide such opportunities for SU members to interact with each other.
