On October 27, Shimane University’s Faculty of Law and Literature and the International Center held a COIL class with the University of Iceland. Twelve students from the University of Iceland, a partner institution of Shimane University, and ten students from Shimane University’s Faculty of Law and Literature participated in this exchange. The theme was jobs and job-hunting related activities.

Each of the groups talked about their ideal future jobs, current part-time jobs and whether or not they are planning on continuing their education after graduation or are going to look for a job. Most of the participants were second year students, so it was hard for them to imagine their future jobs. However, students from Japan and Iceland were interested in the job situation in their partners’ country and asked many questions.

When participants said that in Japan, students apply for loans and get part-time jobs to pay for tuition, the Icelandic students were surprised. In Iceland, students generally do not take out loans or work part-time jobs to pay for tuition because all that is required is to pay an annual registration fee. This was a great learning experience because participants got to know about the differences regarding work around university life.

During the free topic session, students excitedly talked about Iceland’s nature such as auroras, their home towns, hobbies and movies they like. After the class, one of the Shimane University students said that this exchange made him want to study abroad at the University of Iceland, making this COIL opportunity a good chance for exchange.

Shimane University will continue to strengthen its cooperation with partner universities and actively hold COIL classes with the aim of increasing the number of students considering studying abroad.
