On October 5th and 6th, the International Center at Shimane University participated online in the South America International Student Fair, sponsored by Tsukuba University. There were over 600 participants across two days, and twenty-eight educational institutions manned their online booths and gave live informational sessions. Shimane University has been working with Tsukuba University since 2019 to actively promote Shimane University’s undergraduate faculties and graduate schools to high school students, undergraduates, graduates and working professionals in South America.
Two hundred and five participants visited Shimane University’s booth during the fair, and the International Center fielded questions in English, Japanese and Brazilian Portuguese. Seven participants pressed a button on the university page to indicate their interest, and were later contacted via chat to follow up on any questions. Furthermore, a professor at the university gave two live informational sessions and approximately fifteen participants asked questions. At the sessions, the main topic was courses that can be taken in English. Namely, the Bilingual Education Course of the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology. There were many questions about admissions information, English test scores (e.g. TOEFL, etc.), JLPT, scholarships, and admission requirements for the Bilingual Education Course and the Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology.
Through online booths and live informational sessions, Shimane University was able to provide detailed information and create interest in studying abroad at this educational institution. The university will continue to disperse information about its charms and promote events like this to attract larger numbers of international students now and in the future.
