On January 14th, the Center for International Exchanges at Shimane University held its 7th USA Online Cafe. Nine students from the University of Arkansas, one of Shimane University’s international partners, and three students from Shimane University participated and engaged in exchanges through the main topic of how to spend the New Year season.

Students introduced their own customs and traditional food that is eaten during the season. They also spoke about the differences between Japan and the United States regarding how they spend the end and beginning of the year. For example, in Japan, many people usually spend time with their families by staying home and watching the first sunrise of the year. On the other hand, many Americans celebrate with their friends, hang out and watch fireworks. Students found this topic very interesting.

After that, students enjoyed talking about music and asking questions about learning foreign languages. There were positive comments, such as, “When I heard about Matsue, it made me feel like studying abroad at Shimane University.” The Center for International Exchange will actively hold such seminars for the purpose of student exchange for Shimane University students who want to study abroad and to express the attractiveness of studying abroad in Japan and at Shimane University.
