First Brazil Online Cafe

The Shimane University Center for International Exchange concluded a partnership with the University of São Paulo, FFLCH, in July 2020. With this new partnership, the Center for International Exchange held a Brazil Online Cafe in which sixteen students participated, including those in Brazil studying Japanese and those at Shimane University with an interest in Brazil. The online exchange was held in Japanese and English, and this first event’s theme was “Food from your Home Country.” This was Shimane University’s first exchange with a university in Brazil.

During the theme session, students from both universities actively explained and asked questions in Japanese about “brigadeiro” and “churrasco,” which are foods eaten in Brazil, as well as Japanese food such as red bean paste and eels. The students were pleased that they had the opportunity to introduce the food culture from their own respective countries. Some Japanese students discovered that brigadeiro, which they thought was a luxury Brazilian sweet, could be made with Japanese ingredients, and said they wanted to try making it in Japan. In the free talk session, students mainly discussed Japanese and Brazilian culture (such as Carnival), and one Brazilian student taught Portuguese to Shimane University students.

For students from both universities, it was a precious opportunity to learn about the culture of countries separated by a great distance and to interact in both Japanese and English. The Brazil Online Cafe is scheduled to be held again this academic year.

The Shimane University Center for International Exchange will proactively continue to hold these kinds of events so that students can participate in international exchanges in spite of the difficulties of face-to-face communication due to COVID-19.
