公開日 2020年03月25日

An internship tour for international students at companies in Shimane Prefecture was held for seven days from February 2nd to 8th.

This internship program is a part of the I-Turn Employment Promotion Program for International Students launched in July 2017 in collaboration with Shimane University and Toyo University. The purpose is to incite international students from Toyo University, in the metropolitan area, to find jobs in less urban, more local areas. Nineteen international students from Toyo University and three international students from Shimane University who are interested in companies in Shimane participated in the event.

At the Shimane Life and Attractiveness Seminar held prior to the internship tour, Mr. OGASAWARA Keita, the staff of Public Interest Incorporated Foundation the Furusato Shimane Settlement Foundation, a Matsue City Coordinator for International Relations, and former students from Shimane University who work for companies in Shimane Prefecture gave lectures on the living environment in Shimane, job hunting for foreigners in Shimane, and how to live in Shimane. Present were fifteen companies in Shimane Prefecture from various industries such as IT, accommodation, and retail. The international students were divided into groups, and after learning the overview and industry knowledge of each company, the participants experienced actual work on-site and completed a three-day internship.

The international students gave their impressions such as, "I was able to learn things about Japan’s countryside that I had not known before, and was able to experience the actual workplace," and "It was a very good experience to be able to hear directly from the manager." The personnel of the companies that accepted the internships also gave their impressions such as, "I was surprised at the high level of Japanese language ability and communication skills of international students," and "I was impressed by the enthusiasm and curiosity of international students."

On the last day, the students learned about the charms of Matsue through a tea ceremony experience at Matsue Castle and the surrounding area, and completed the entire internship program in Shimane.

Through events such as this, Shimane University plans to provide opportunities for communication between international students and local companies to promote the employment of international students as a community-minded university.
