Exchange Event to Learn Dojo Culture

公開日 2020年02月26日

The Center for International Exchange at Shimane University held an exchange event for international students to learn about Japanese dojo (pond loach) culture. Participants of this event consisted of six students, including international students from Shimane University, and Ms. ISHIDA Yumi, a developer of dojo gourmet cuisine in Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture. The students and Ms. ISHIDA shared their opinions regarding dojo cultures in their own countries.

After tasting tsukudani (food simmered in soy sauce) made of dojo from Yasugi City, the international students gave their impressions. They explained that dojo is being sold at high prices as a high-end ingredient in their home countries, how it is eaten differently depending on the country’s region, and everyone learned the difference between Japanese dojo culture and their own country’s culture through this event. Ms. ISHIDA expressed her desire to make dojo more known to the world and to have the people of Yasugi become enthusiastic by making use of what she learned through the exchange with the international students.

Shimane University will continue to promote exchange opportunities and the various charms of Shimane for international students' understanding of Japanese culture and local community development.
