The International Center held its Chinese Online Cafe on April 21st. Twelve students from Chang’an University, one of Shimane University’s international partners, six students from Shimane University, and two staff members participated and engaged in an exchange through the main topic of how to enjoy Hanami/shang hua (cherry blossom viewing).

Shimane University has accepted many exchange students since the agreement with Chang’an University as an international partner in 2018. However, since the COVID-19 pandemic, exchange students have not been able to come to Japan. As a result, the International Center established the Chinese Online Cafe to create an opportunity for students to communicate.

The theme of cherry blossom viewing was chosen because the event was held in April. In the beginning of the session, the students introduced themselves and got to know each other. Students from Chang’an University spoke about their interest in anime, and students from Shimane University talked about their study abroad experiences in China.

Next, participants talked about cherry blossom viewing, and Chinese students introduced how to enjoy shang hua in China with pictures of spring flowers such as peony, plum and cherry blossoms. Japanese students explained that Japanese people enjoy cherry blossom flavored sweets in addition to viewing cherry blossoms.

One student said, “An hour and a half was not enough time to talk,” and seemed happy with this session. Director Han at the Japanese Language Department at Chang’an University gave a comment as well: “We were able to spend a fruitful time and create a relationship between the students at both universities. I hope there will be more students who think about studying abroad.”

Shimane University will continue to hold online exchange events with international partners to give opportunities to make new discoveries.
