During the month of November 2019, Shimane University held a month-long event tilted “SU Global Month” and organized various international exchange events. As a part of this month-long event, a tour to the Tezen Museum, located close to Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine in Izumo city, was organized with the purpose to give international students a chance to experience the traditional culture in the Izumo region. Shimane University and the Tezen Museum concluded a collaboration agreement in May 2019. This tour was jointly organized by the parties in the agreement, including Shimane University Library, San’in Research Center, the Faculty of Law and Literature at Shimane University, and the Center for International Exchange at Shimane University. Five international students from China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Benin and Malaysia joined the tour, accompanied by faculty members of the Center for International Exchange.

The Tezen family had been merchants since the Edo period, and their home served as a guest house for the Matsue clan. As a result, the family inherited many pieces of artwork and crafts that are now exhibited at the Tezen Museum located on the family premises. After arriving at the museum, the participants enjoyed the special exhibition of Fujina-yaki ware. They later learned how to properly tie the string of wooden safekeeping boxes containing artwork, following the instructions by Museum Curator Ms. Anri Sasaki.

They had a chance to hold wakizashi, a short Japanese sword, in their hands to take a close look at the decoration in the sword.

Later they moved to a Japanese style room where the owner’s wife in kimono Japanese traditional wear welcomed them by offering green tea and Japanese confectioneries. The participants each introduced themselves, and the owner Mr. Hakusaburo Tezen spoke with each participants in English, creating a friendly atmosphere. The students were able to experience traditional Japanese culture in a relaxed atmosphere throughout the tour. One of the participants made a comment that he was very impressed and wanted to tell family and friends in his home country about this precious experience.
