On 27th August, 2018, 8 International students participated in Kendo and Judo Experience & Security Education Seminar for International students held by Matsue Police Office. Until last year, only kendo and judo lesson had been instructed, but this year, the Security Education Seminar was also provided and students learned about the emergency call #110 and Japanese traffic rules.
On that day, after attending the lectures about the demonstration of emergency call #110, the importance of locking the bicycle, Japanese traffic regulation/rule and the Visa status, they experienced kendo and judo and learned “Goshin-Jutsu”, the art of self-defense, at a specialized hall in the Matsue police station. After the lesson, they interacted with police officers while eating Kakigori - shaved ice, as experiencing Japanese Omotenashi - hospitality culture.
At the beginning of this event, students seemed to feel nervous, but through the lectures and learning the way of wearing kendo and judo uniform and practicing with police officers, they gradually got familiar with the police officers. They enjoyed communicating in easy Japanese and English.
It was a precious opportunity for International Students to learn Japanese traditional culture, Budo, and the security system on their living in Japan.
