The Center for International Exchanges at Shimane University held its Summer School Program for ten days from July 8th to the 17th. The purpose of this program is for participants to study the basics of Japanese language, while also learning about Shimane prefecture’s and Japan’s history and culture. Six students participated from partnership institutions in the United States, Korea and China.
During the Summer School session, students took Japanese language lectures in the morning and participated in planned activities in the afternoon. These trips included visiting locations such as Matsue Castle and Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine, experiencing Matsue traditions such as tea ceremonies and Japanese sweet making, and soaking up local history and culture. Participants also had stimulating interactions with Shimane University student conversation partners and at university club activities. Through exchanges with their homestay families, the Summer School students were able to deepen their relationships with various members of the community.
As a testament to how much the students had learned in their Japanese lectures, they all gave presentations in Japanese about the differences in sense of values and ways of thinking between Japan and their home countries they themselves felt during the program. Shimane University students, faculty and staff, and local members of the community gave a big round of applause to these students who actively presented in their non-native language about their thoughts based on their experience of a different culture.
As a university open to the world and the community, Shimane University will further deepen its cooperation with partner universities through such activities.
