Shimane University held the performance of Kalaripayattu, the traditional martial art of Kerala in India on the campus on Wednesday May 17 as a one of the events for "2017-Year of India-Japan friendly exchanges". Before the performance, the captain of Kalaripayattu troupe made a courtesy visit to the president of Shimane University and explained about Kalaripayattu to him. About one hundred of audience including students of Shimane University martial art clubs and off-campus martial art enthusiasts enjoyed performance.
Kalaripayattu troupe exhibited the fight in hand-to-hand or with short swords and long swords, the fight with their hands to short swords or to long swords, and grappling to a dominant hand. After the performance, some of audience practiced the warm-up exercise before and at the end of Kalaripayattu with the performers. The performers also explained that Kalaripayattu is the original form of martial art and Indian health management method.
The center for international exchanges continues to hold performances and seminars in order to promote cross-cultural understanding.
