Shimane University cafeteria has started offering the much-awaited Halal-friendly food from September 26, 2016.
A request to offer Halal food at the university cafeteria was first submitted by Muslim students studying at Matsue campus of Shimane University in March, 2016. Through several meetings among Shimane University COOP who operates the cafeteria, international students and Shimane University, the Halal food offering has been realized with the enormous efforts by the cafeteria staff.
Shimane University accepts 179 international students as of May 1, 2016 and around 30 of them are from Muslim countries, such as Bangladesh, Indonesia and Afghanistan. The increase in number of international students at Shimane University has brought a diversity in students’ cultural backgrounds and religions. With this change, Shimane University is more expected to understand and meet different requirements to set up more comfortable campus for students with any background.
Shimane University would like to take this opportunity not only for providing a better campus life with international students, but also for giving Japanese students a chance to deepen their understandings toward different cultures, as a part of the promotion of the university’s globalization.
