Thanks to hospitality and cooperation of Ohnan town, Shimane prefecture, which has the Partnership Agreement with Shimane University since 2009, we successfully implemented the 6th International Students' Field Trip to Ohnan Town for the purpose of promoting International Students' Understanding of Japanese Culture and Humanity from September 5th to 8th, 2015.
The Total number of participants was 19, including 3 Japanese students, and 3 university staffs accompanied them. Our themes of the trip are not only to experience Japanese local traditional culture at Home (Farm) stay and hold the Ohnan International Festival, but also to hold international workshops at Yakami High School and Kuchiba Elementary School to spread our international friendship.
On the first day, students visited Yakami High School to enjoy cooperative cooking of Pizza with Ohnan Vegetables and assembling bamboos for flowing-somen-noodles. They also had exciting debates in English with high school students. At night of the day, Izuwa-Kagura dance team exhibited very powerful Iwami-Kagura. Students also enjoyed trying Kagura costumes on and traditional musical instruments.
On the next day, we held the Ohnan International Festival. Students enjoyed a stage of Yosakoi-dance and cooking of local traditional sushi with members of local food preservation group. In addition, international students made presentation about their own countries, and experienced Ohnan traditional stage of Taue-bayashi and Yamamba-drums with approx.70 local participants.
The last 2 nights and 3 days, students experienced Japanese traditional lifestyles and cultural richness by local home (farm) staying. On the final day, students visited Kuchiba Elementary School to have cultural exchanges events and athletic meeting with kids.
Throughout this trip, all participants could feel and enjoy the richness of nature, warmth of people and several new findings of real Japanese culture. They also gained unforgettable experiences to deepen their mutual understanding beyond nationality, age, language and culture by getting together in several situations.
