For the purpose of participating in 2015 Summer Program at Gyeongsang National University (GNU) of Korea, eleven Shimane University students visited the Republic of Korea from August 18th to 28th. GNU is one of the Partner Universities of Shimane University and this kind of summer program has been annually held since 1991, when we concluded the academic and student exchange agreement with GNU.
This summer program enhanced the participating students’ understanding on Korean culture and history. During the stay, they were able to learn not only traditional culture and history but also the advanced technologies in Korea by a couple of lectures on Korean language, culture and economies, colorful field trips and hands-on programs; trying on Korean traditional wears and visiting Jinju Castle, Songkwang Temple, Naganeupseong Folk Village, Historic Park of Geoje POW Camp, Aerospace Museum, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, etc. through the program at Gyeongsang National University. They were able to put themselves into feeling and understanding Korean culture and spirits which could not be gained in Japan.
Also, students had joyful time in interacting with GNU students who came to Shimane University last June to join in the summer program, and experienced Korean students’ lives.
The highlight of the program was a three days and two nights homestay. Students were crazy about homestay and overwhelmed by this precious experience to stay with genuine Korean families. They were able to make precious memories having a wonderful time with their warmhearted host families. Some students were so touched and cried during the farewell banquet.
We do hope that participants will make the most use of the results for their study and careers, and become a global leader in the future.
