公開日 2014年09月12日

Thanks to hospitality and cooperation of Ohnan town, Shimane prefecture, which has the Partnership Agreement with Shimane University since 2009, the Center for International Exchanges of Shimane University successfully implemented the 5th International Students' Field Trip to Ohnan Town for the purpose of promoting international students' understanding of Japanese Culture and Humanity from September 6th to 9th, 2014.
Total number of international students was 19, and 3 Japanese students and 3 university staffs accompanied them. This year, the trip is supported by the Nakashima Memorial International Exchange Fund. Our themes of the trip are not only to experience Japanese local traditional culture at Home (Farm) stay and join Ohnan International Festival, but also to hold international workshops at Yakami High School and Takahara Elementary School to spread our international friendship.

On the first day, students visited Yakami High School to enjoy cooperative cooking of international foods, udon and tempura. They also had exciting debates in English with high school students. At night of the day, Izuwa-Kagura dance team exhibited very powerful Iwami-Kagura. Students also enjoyed trying Kagura costumes on and traditional musical instruments. On the next day, students participated in Ohnan International Festival. In the morning, they made oshizushi, a local traditional food, with Society for Research on Local Food of Ohnan Town. In the afternoon, the festival included a mini-concert by Masatoshi Okuno, Drumming performed by Yamanba-Daiko (Old Mountain’s Witches Drumming Team) and a fashion show by the international students. They enjoyed interacting with local people.
The last 2 nights and 3 days, students experienced Japanese traditional lifestyles and cultural richness in each local home (farm) staying. On the final day, students visited Takahara Elementary School to have cultural exchanges events and school lunch meeting with kids.

Throughout this trip, all participants reported to get opportunity to feel and enjoy the richness of nature, warmth of people and several good findings of real Japanese culture. We hope that they would make full use of the valuable experiences in their future.
